Question:
Do you think people should be allowed to withhold tax if they don't agree with the government?

I'm asking because a lefty person I once knew said he would gladly pay more tax if we had a "nice" govt who didn't waste money on wars. A righty might be willing to pay more tax if the govt stopped sponsoring welfare breeders.

My answer is no.

There are people who really need welfare!

The bureacracy associated with everyone picking what taxes they want to pay would be enormous, and we'd end up paying double anyway.

The leftist is just proving how stupid his ideology is, because the whole point of tax is, it’s compulsory.

He is saying he doesn’t even agree with his own ideology. It’s idiots like him who are responsible for perpetual war, because they believe the government has a presumptive right to our money, and that a right is whatever the government says it is.

People have been doing this for decades, mainly for military spending. I remover er Joan Baez doing it in America, and the CND here often discussed it.

You should have tick boxes for the bits you want and opt in to the tax. It wouldn't work though would it, nobody would pay taxes voluntarily and it would be impossible to keep track of the whole thing.

Welfare breeders are about 0.00000000001% of the population so I calculate that at about 1p a year, sure go ahead, you can withhold that.

Sound awesome. But every ody would have an excuse ot to pay, for something or other. They would be allowed to give to the charity of their choice. With proof of the donation.

Maybe that would work. But still would deny much needed funds.

No. When given the opportunity, you vote the government out of office for a new one that better suits your viewpoint.

what you gonna do when no taxpayer agrees with what the government is doing with their money?

(it dont have to be ALL their taxes, just their taxes that go towards this or that government spending

How you gonna work out how much tax rebate they are gonna get as a result?)

No. 'Taxpayers' always feel so entitled don't they?

It is levied as public money and they have no say in how it is used.

The only way they can control spending is at the ballot box

but then so can all the non-taxpayers who bother to vote.

well you became independent to avoid taxes, you are the richest country on earth but have places like Alabama and 40 million living in poverty the world is leaving you behind with high speed trains and roads and you have a 22 trillion dollar debt to fund a war machine , whats the incentive

Of course not. Most governments are not elected by vast majorities. It's usually 60/40 or less. So at least 40% of people wouldn't be paying tax. The country would be bankrupt in a month.
